About Barra and Vatersay Machair SAC

The Barra and Vatersay Machair SAC is located on the islands of Barra and Vatersay, part of the Outer Hebrides archipelago off Scotland’s west coast. This protected area consists mainly of machair, a rare coastal grassland habitat formed by windblown shell sand, creating fertile and ecologically valuable dunes and grasslands. The machair supports a wide array of plant species including orchids, and acts as important breeding grounds for many bird species such as corncrakes, skylarks, and terns. The SAC encompasses sandy beaches, dunes, grasslands, and associated wetland habitats along the western shores. These environments have been shaped over millennia by the interaction of natural forces and traditional crofting (small-scale farming). Visitors to the area find opportunities for birdwatching, beach walking, and exploring quiet, open landscapes that contrast with the rugged hill terrain inland. The islands offer a unique glimpse into Gaelic culture and traditional island life, with small communities and historical sites scattered nearby. The remote location means peace and solitude for visitors seeking natural beauty, while the coastal scenery invites all keen on photography, beachcombing, and nature study. Barra and Vatersay Machair SAC plays a vital role in conserving a priority habitat type that is increasingly rare in Europe, and it is an important refuge for wildlife and open-space recreation in the Hebrides.
